The record

An old site’s addresses, read one by one on the new site until each had a place. No client is named.

One evening,every address

The count

  • 455old addresses, every one given a place
  • 198kept where they were
  • 239sent on to the page that replaced them
  • 18retired on purpose

October 2026, in one evening. Every read below ran on the new site before it went live.

The night

  1. 02:11

The new site is asked for all 455 addresses the old one ever published, from its sitemaps and the Wayback Machine, before any map is loaded.

    read at 02:11

  2. 02:26

The read ends: 189 answer, 221 return a 404, 27 time out, and 18 are retired without the 410 they should give.

    read at 02:26

  3. 02:34

With the map in, 239 redirects and 18 retirements, the read finds 205 answering, 85 redirected, 18 retired and 147 lost. 141 of the lost all point at one page that cannot exist.

    read at 02:34

  4. The cause

A path rewritten on its way into the map tool. Both map files are fixed, 150 rows each, and the tool now refuses a path that arrives that way.

    fixed at the source

  5. 02:57

The read again: 204 answering, 226 redirected, 18 retired, 7 lost. One is a page renamed that night, the loss a monthly read exists to catch. Six wait on the owner’s ruling.

    read at 02:57

What the night left

Seven addresses were still lost when the night ended.

One was a page renamed that same night, which is exactly the loss a monthly read exists to catch. The other six wait on the owner’s ruling: whether those pages come back, go somewhere new, or retire. We would rather show the seven than round them away.
